What foods should I avoid while taking doxycycline?
To reap the most benefits from your doxycycline, stay away from foods rich in iron or minerals (spinach, tofu, chia seeds), dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt), and foods fortified with calcium (cereals, orange juice). They bind to the antibiotic and significantly decrease its absorption.
Essential Foods and Supplements –
At least 2 hours before and 2 hours after your dose, stay away from these items:
Milk, butter, cream, cheese, ice cream, kefir, and whey protein are all dairy products.
Foods Fortified with Calcium: Tofu, calcium-fortified juices, and calcium-fortified non-dairy milks (oat, soy, almond).
Spinach, chia seeds, and kale are greens with a lot of minerals.
Vitamins and supplements: Do not take calcium, iron, magnesium, or zinc supplements at the same time as your drug.
Antacids including magnesium, calcium, or aluminum are remedies for heartburn.
Advice for Better Drug Absorption
Drink a full glass of water with your dose to help minimize throat irritation.
Don’t lie down: Stand up straight for at least half an hour after taking your medication to prevent your esophagus from getting irritated.
If Doxycycline causes stomach discomfort, take it with a light meal that doesn’t contain any restricted foods or dairy, even though it’s ideal to take it on an empty stomach.
