ENT SURGERIES

by
ENT SURGERIES-This includes several surgeries like tympanoplasty, tonsillectomy, ossciculoplasty, mastoid surgery,e.t.c which are described in detail in the article given below .Otolaryngologists, commonly referred to as ENT (ears, nose, throat) surgeons, deal with the diagnosis, evaluation and management of diseases of the head and neck and principally the ears, nose, throat. ENT doctors are trained in surgery as well. That means for most procedures, your ENT doctor can handle your care from start to finish.
One of the key areas of concern for ENT surgeons is helping patients cope with or recover from diseases that impair the senses of hearing and balance. They will be concerned with the functional aspects of breathing, eating and speech.
Surgery will be necessary when non-invasive treatments and medications cannot improve the condition in question. They may also be harnessed to address injuries and deformities.
Among the conditions in ears, nose, throat that ENT doctors can address are:
● Sinusitis
● Nose infections and injuries
● Ear infections
● Various sleep disorders, including sleep apnea
● Vertigo
● Head and neck pain
● Speech and swallowing disorders
● Tonsillitis.
Principle sub-specialties of ENT surgeries
● Otology – Treatment of infection, disease and damage to the ear to improve hearing and balance.
● Rhinology – Treatment of sinus and nasal disorders, including allergy, to relieve pain, ease breathing and improve nasal function.
● Laryngology – Treatment of infections of the throat and larynx to ease speech and swallowing.
● Head and neck surgery – away from the main surgeries for ENT, specializing in cysts, glands such as lymph, salivary, thyroid and parathyroid glands, and head and neck cancers.
● Paediatrics – there are many ears, nose, throat conditions, often congenital, that require treatment at a very young age. These include airway problems, infections of adenoids or tonsils that require their removal, and.
grommets for ‘glue ear’.
Common ENT Surgeries
Nasal Polyps Removal Surgery
Nasal polyps are non-cancerous growths that can develop in the lining of your nose, usually found where the sinuses open into the nasal cavity. They are likely to cause issues like nasal obstruction, trouble breathing through the nose, snoring, and severe sinus headaches and pressure.
In cases where drug treatments don’t provide effective relief, nasal polyps removal surgery may be considered.
During these common ENT surgeries, the polyps and any other problematic tissue can be precisely removed. Your ENT surgeon may also enlarge the openings leading from your sinuses to your nasal passages. Special instruments are passed through your nostrils to perform the corrections, so no incisions will need to be made to your face.
Septoplasty
The septum is that vertical wall in your nose that divides it into two nasal
passages. Any abnormalities of the septum, such as its deviation, could inhibit one’s breathing ability.
To correct such a deviated septum, surgeries for ENT like Septoplasty is performed. It may also be necessary to allow for an adequate examination of the inside of the nose for the treatment or removal of nasal polyps or tumors. Some cutting and removal of components of the septum may be required. They are then reinserted in their proper position.
Tonsillectomy (With or Without Adenoidectomy)
A tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the tonsils. It remains among the most common ENT surgeries 2021 in children as well as adults who suffer from constant throat infections and ear infections.
An adenoidectomy is a surgery to remove the adenoids when a child has had breathing problems or ear and sinus problems that won’t go away with antibiotics.
A tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A) is done to remove both the tonsils and the adenoids when a child has both breathing and swallowing problems.
This procedure completely eliminates problems with the tonsils including recurrent and chronic sore throats, mouth breathing and snoring, mild sleep apnea, tonsil stones, and chronic bad breath.
Because the ENT surgeon can reach the tonsils and adenoids simply by opening the child’s mouth, there are no incisions needed on the outside of the skin.
Sinus Surgery
Sinus surgery may be the last resort when therapeutics cannot effectively treat chronic sinus infections. The ENT surgeon performs the procedure to make the sinus openings larger so that they can drain. This procedure optimizes the way the sinuses function and lessens the potential for infection.
ENT doctors now use an endoscope to perform sinus surgery. Since almost all sinus surgery is done with micro telescopes and micro instruments and access is through the nasal passages, there is no more scarring. These kinds of common ENT surgeries 2021 is minimally invasive and are often performed on an outpatient basis.
Mastoid Surgery
The mastoid is the part of your skull located behind your ear. A mastoidectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the diseased mastoid air cells, which are often the result of an ear infection that has spread into your skull.
The procedure can also be used to remove an abnormal growth of the ear known as a cholesteatoma. Cholesteatoma is a pocket of skin that grows from the outer ear into the
middle ear and causes infection with discharge and some hearing loss. This surgery can also remove abnormal.
growths at the base of your skull.
Your ENT doctor may also perform a mastoidectomy to put in a cochlear implant. This small electronic device can help provide you with a sense of sound if you’re profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing.
Tympanoplasty
Tympanoplasty is a reconstructive surgery technique to repair a defect in the eardrum or the tympanic membrane with the placement of a  graft. The goal of this surgical procedure is not only to close the perforation but also to improve hearing.
Tympanoplasty is a safe and effective outpatient procedure used to both eradicate the disease from the middle ear and restore hearing and middle ear function.
Ossiculoplasty
Ossiculoplasty refers to the surgical process of restoring the hearing system between the tympanic membrane and oval window.
Ideally, this surgery is executed to improve or sustain the conductive portion of hearing loss by reforming the faulty ossicular chain in the middle ear cavity through the use of some interpositioned devices.
Ossicular abnormalities can range from loss of ossicular continuity due to trauma, surgical manipulation or middle ear pathology such as cholesteatoma or fixation of the ossicles in cases of otosclerosis and myringostapediopexy.
Or it can be a combination of both.
